Abstract
This paper aims to describe the changes in the dowry institution carried out by Islam and its relationship to the kinship system that Islam wants. In the tradition of pre-Islamic Arab society, a dowry is paid to the father or guardian of the bride as compensation for taking the bride from her family, with a value that is adjusted to the status of her family. This provision is in accordance with the Arab patrilineal kinship system. Islam then changed this tradition. The dowry is paid to the bride at an agreed value. This change indicates a shift from a patrilineal kinship system to a bilateral system.
